Benefits of Active Research by Clinicians
We Clinicians/Ophthalmologists have always strived to provide the best care possible to our patients. We also firmly believe in personalized care and that one treatment does not suit all. On many occasions and some regularly, provide customized eye care to patients based on the evidence available with excellent clinical outcome. This highlights “the power of information” and its impact on patients’ well-being and
clinical practice. Hence, continued evidence and knowledge generation through research efforts will certainly improve clinical outcome and success. As clinicians, we are better suited to generate new evidence with immediate clinical context, correlates and relevance. Engaging in “translational and/or clinical research” is essential to (i) ensure safety and efficacy of current treatments, (ii) identify newer indications for approved therapeutic options and (iii) develop novel therapeutics and prophylactic strategies for conditions which have challenged clinicians and compromised the quality of life of patients. These three factors have enormous impact on public health. The current and future paradigm of translational and clinical research is “integrating the sciences”that includes clinical sciences, basic biology, physical science and mathematics. Hence, collaborative translational and clinical research will deliver sustainable and effective health care advancements. Clinicians in the forefront of this effort will drive technological advancements into mainstream health
care strategies with profound clinical and public health impact. Hence, active participation by a larger body of clinicians in research is a much required need, to advance disease specific knowledge and patient care.
