Tackling the Challenge of Presbyopia

Presbyopia has a frustrating yet unavoidable condition. The mechanism of presbyopia is as yet not fullyunderstood, but changes in the ciliary body, zonules, lens capsule and lens itself are known to play a role. Thiscourse will help to understand the optics behind presbyopia which is needed to understand the treatmentmodalities. It will also highlight the current, new and experimental modalities for treatment of presbyopia.Current and experimental presbyopic surgical methods can be divided into 3 groups: replacement of thecrystalline lens with a presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (multifocal, accommodative and extendeddepth of focus lenses), refractive surgery of the cornea (Presbylasik and presbyopic allogenic refractivelenticule) or crystalline lens and modification of the sclerociliary complex. All these modalities will be dis-cussed with special focus will be on case discussions highlighting which modality to use in which case to getbest possible outcomes.
