Aim to describe clinical features, histopathology(HPE),treatment & outcomes of conjunctival melanoma at a tertiary centre in South India.Retrospective study of 40 patients was done. The mean age at presentation was 44 years (median(M),45 yrs;range(R) 9-78 yrs)with 19 males & 21 females. 19 patients(48%)had past history of pre-existing lesion,14 nevus (35%) & 5 primary acquired melanosis(PAM)(13%). Mean basal diameter of lesion was 12mm(M:10 mm;R 4-30 mm).Majority patients had pigmented lesion(80%).As primary treatment,26(65%) pts underwent excision biopsy,11(28%)exenteration & 3 lost to follow-up.Out of 33pts whose report was available,7 (21%) had associated nevus,10(30%) had PAM, & 1(3%) patient had both PAM & nevus. 4 (13%) pts had tumor recurrence,3(10%) developed lymph node metastasis &1(3%) brain metstasis during a mean follow-up period of 11 months (M:5;R:<1-67 mo). Thus, conjunctival melanoma is rare in Asian Indians and has high rate of recurrence & regional lymph node metastasis.
