Retrospective analysis of medical records of patients diagnosed with congenital NLDO was done. 100 consecutive cases(200 eyes) from Jan 2017 to May 2018 were included. Children with other ophthalmic abnormalities which may affect refractive state like ptosis, strabismus, microphthalmia etc. were excluded. Demographic data and cycloplegic refraction were analyzed.
Age group ranged from 2 months to 7 years with male : female of 62:38. Mean age was 24±21 months. NLDO was bilateral in 29% and Unilateral in rest ( R:L=30%: 41%)Total prevalence of refractive errors was 182/200 eyes (91%). Types of refractive errors included mixed astigmatism 99 eyes (49.5%),hyperopia-30eyes(15%),simple myopic astigmatism 29eyes(14.5%),compound myopic astigmatism 19eyes (9.5%) & myopia in 5 eyes(2.5%)
91% cases of NLDO had some refractive error. Mixed astigmatism was the commonest subtype. This suggest the need for complete evaluation including cycloplegic refraction in children with congenital NLDO.
