Dr.Arpita Suketu Maniar, M18412

Purpose:To compare the clinical presentation and outcome of younger and older Asian Indian children with Retinoblastoma

Methods:Retrospective comparative study of 1940 eyes of 1350 children aged less than 5 years(group 1) and 123 eyes of 100 children aged 5 to 20 years(group 2).

Results:The mean age at diagnosis in group 1 was 24 months and 83 months in group 2. There was no gender predilection. Leukocoria remained the commonest presenting symptom in both the groups(61% in group 1 vs 53% in group 2). Based on the 8th edition of American Joint Committee Classification, group 1 vs group 2 were classified as T1 (19%vs15%), T2 (29%vs32%), T3 (45% vs31%), and T4 (7% vs22%). The globe and life salvage rates in group 1 vs group 2 were 50% vs 30% and 93% vs 83% respectively over a mean follow-up period of 50 months in group 1 and 42 months in group 2.

Conclusion:Life and globe salvage rates are better in younger children presenting with retinoblastoma than those presenting at an older age..
