Purpose:
To study incidence of ocular hypertension in patients using inhaled corticosteroids for Asthma/COPD.
Study design: A prospective observational study.
Setting: Medical college and hospital
Duration of study: January to December 2017.
Patients and Methods:
100 subjects above 50 years diagnosed to have Asthma /COPD who were prescribed inhaled steroids for the first time were enrolled into the study . After a complete ophthalmic examination, IOP was measured using Goldman applanation tonometer at the beginning and at each follow up visit every month. Visual fields were recorded at 3rd, 6th and12th month using Humphery visual field analyser.
Results:
Incidence of patients with increased IOP at the end of one year was 5%. All patients recorded with high IOP had used very high doses of corticosteroids (>1000 mcg ). None of them had either optic disc changes or visual field defects.
Conclusion:
High doses of inhaled corticosteroids increase the risk of ocular hypertension.
