Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is a sight-threatening disease. Although remarkable progress has been achieved in the surgical treatment of eyes RRD, it is still difficult to predict postoperative visual outcomes. Thus there is a need to detect ultrastructural changes in macula using OCT and correlate it with visual recovery.
A prospective interventional study was carried out. A total of 50 eyes who underwent reattachment surgery and followed up for more than 12 months were included. Pre and postoperative SD OCT characteristics, were comprehensively analyzed using univariate and multivariate models.
Preoperative factors associated with the poor vision were extent of detachment, macula-off duration, and ELM integrity. Outer retinal microstructures, particularly the photoreceptor outer segment layer such as photoreceptor outer segment layer were significant. Ratio such as HFL+ONL/photoreceptor could be used to predict visual outcome preoperatively.
