AIM: To study the long term anatomical and visual outcome of choroidal coloboma with retinal detachment (RD) managed by pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with silicone oil tamponade.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen eyes of 16 patients with RD related to choroidal coloboma underwent PPV with silicone oil tamponade. The main outcome measures were retinal reattachment and visual recovery.
RESULTS: The retina in all cases (100%) undergoing vitrectomy were completely reattached intra-operatively. At end of 6 month, re-RD developed in 1 case. The best-corrected visual acuity improved from preoperative median of counting fingers (range 20/200 to perception of light) to median best-corrected visual acuity of 20/200 (range 20/40 to counting fingers) at the end of 6 months. Eight eyes (50%) eyes underwent successful silicon oil removal.
CONCLUSION: PPV along with silicone oil tamponade for RD related to choroidal coloboma has good long-term anatomical and visual outcome.
