Dr.NEHA GHOSE, N20134

Background: PIH is a disease spectrum with high mortality and morbidity. Conditions causing visual loss in PIH include hypertensive changes, retinal detachments and cortical blindness.

Aim: To determine association between ocular fundus changes and gravida, proteinuria, disease severity, maternal mortality and foetal outcome.

Material & Method: The study was a cross sectional analytical study of 150 patients.

Result: Fundus changes were seen in 50.6% of patients. Majority of fundus changes (76.3%) was seen in primigravidae. Positive fundus findings were seen in 19.3% cases of mild pre-eclampsia, 93.7% of severe pre-eclampsia and 93.3% of eclampsia. Fundus changes had statistically significant association with proteinuria. Positive findings were seen in 86.6% cases of preterm birth and in all cases of intrauterine death.

Conclusion: All PIH cases should undergo ophthalmoscopy as fundus changes are important prognostic indicators of disease severity in the mother and of foetal outcome.
