PURPOSE- To assess the reduction in intraocular pressure following phacoemulsification surgery in angle closure patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS- We studied prospectively the reduction in intraocular pressure following phacoemulsification surgery in angle closure patients which included patients aged 50-80 years with Iop>22 mm Hg on 2 or more ocassions with angle closure on gonioscopy.
RESULTS-120 eyes of 100 patients were studied .Mean age 50-80years and their iop calculated pre and post operatively.Out of 120 eyes 18 patients had a reduction in iop of 1-3mmHg,32 eyes had3-5 mmHg reduction and 70 patients had a reduction of>5mmHg .
CONCLUSION-.A thick crystalline lens leads to angle closure through reduction of anterior chamber depth and narrowing of the angle. Thus cataract extraction is a definite management for angle closure patients who have thick lens.
