BACKGROUND:
NEC are rare, highly aggressive neoplasms that infrequently metastasize to the orbit.
METHOD:
A 78 years old male presented with swelling & decreased vision of right eye since 15 days. Physical examination confirmed a R/E proptosis with extraocular movements restricted in all gazes.MRI Brain & Orbit revealed an intraosseous neoplastic lesion involving lateral wall of right orbit & adjacent temporal bone. Orbital mass biopsy indicated possibility of poorly differentiated malignant epithelial tumor. IHC was suggestive of high grade neuroendocrine carcinoma.
RESULT:
Further workup was done to find the primary site & PETscan revealed a soft tissue lesion involving upper lobe of left lung. Patient was referred to oncologist & is currently receiving chemotherapy. Visual acuity is improving after it.
CONCLUSION:
NEC with orbit metastasis is very rare but associated with indolent course & prolonged survival, hence early treatment of orbit metastasis can help prevent visual loss.
