AIM: Profile glaucoma subtypes in patients referred to glaucoma clinic.
METHODS
Retrospective study in tertiary eye hospital, over 16 month period was done, where glaucoma types, grades & treatment protocol were studied.
RESULTS
Of 1058 patients, males predominated at 60%. Maximal 54% were in 6th decade or above, 38% ( 20-50 years) and 8% less than 20 years.
Glaucoma subtypes were: angle closure glaucoma (PACG) 23%, ACG suspects 13%, open angle glaucoma (POAG) 22%, OAG suspects 15%, secondary glaucoma 13% & primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) 2.5%. No glaucoma was found in 11.5% cases.
Almost 13% presented with glaucoma blindness in one eye. Glaucoma surgery was required in 17.5% & anti-glaucoma medications in 32%.
CONCLUSION
Primary glaucoma predominate in hospital referrals with equal numbers of closed or open angles. Advanced glaucoma remains common & almost 1/4th cases required surgical intervention. Referral practice was robust with overdiagnosis seen in 12% .
