Inspite of control of intraocular pressure, primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) progresses, strengthens the fact that other risk factors play a role in its pathogenesis. Among many, dyslipidemia probably due to lipid peroxidation and atherogenesis is hypothesized for progression of POAG. Few studies have been done, the results of which are contradictory. The present study done from May 2015 to June 2016 to analyse the relation between serum lipids and POAG. It was conducted on 40 patients with POAG (case) and 40 individuals without POAG (control). Ophthalmic examination was performed in all patients; Total cholesterol, triglyceride, Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) were measured and analysed between two groups. Level of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL were significantly higher in cases than controls. Level of HDL was lower in cases than controls. To conclude, dyslipidemia is an independent risk factor for POAG.
