Prof.Joginder Pal Chugh, C04295

Aim: To study epidemiology, pattern of visual deficits following mechanical ocular trauma and factors contributing to it

Material and Methods: It was a prospective, hospital based observational study of 200 patients. Detailed history regarding type of activity during injury, type of injuring agent, mechanism of injury, time between injury and first presentation to hospital and any treatment taken was recorded. Visual acuity, external ocular examination, detailed slit lamp examination, ocular motility, pupillary reaction, ophthalmoscopy, was carried out

Results: 84% patients had ant. segment involvement and 16% had post. segment involvement.Closed globe injuries(81%) were more common than open globe injuries(19%). Road side accidents(30%) was the most common cause of injury.Only 27% presented within 24 hours of injury; 44% between 1-5 days and 29% presented later than 5 days. Corneal perforation with iris prolapse was the most commonly encountered finding in open globe injuries.
