Purpose: Histopathological features in Rb with non-resolving media opacity, precluding visualization of the tumor
Methods: Our retrospective case series included 29 eyes of 29 consecutive patients with Rb with non-visualization of tumor due to non-resolving(>3m) media opacity during treatment, who underwent enucleation. Outcome measures were presence of histopathological risk factors(HRF) and systemic metastasis
Results: The mean age was 31.1±15.7m. Media opacity was caused by non-resolving vitreous hemorrhage in 20(69%) eyes, total hyphema in 3(10%), total cataract in 5(17%) and corneal opacity in 1(3%). Histopathology revealed viable tumor in 22(76%) eyes and HRF in 7(24%). Children with HRF received adjuvant chemotherapy. None had metastasis or death at the mean follow up of 13.6±10.9m after enucleation
Conclusion: Rb patients who develop non-resolving media opacity during treatment, have a high chance of harboring an underlying active tumor and such eyes may be promptly enucleated.
