PURPOSE:
To study the prevalence of dry eyes after phacoemulsification surgery and relation to Microscopic light exposure time(MLET).
METHODS:
In this cross-sectional study 100 patients without dry eye having cataract willing to undergo phacoemulsification surgery without any predisposing factor for dry eye were included.Tear breakup time, Schirmer’s and Lissamine green staining were done pre-op and post-op at 1 week, 1 month and 2 months. Its relation to intra-op MLET was determined.
RESULTS:
There was deterioration of dry eye test values after Phacoemulsification surgery. In 68% of cases, the values started improving after 1‑month postoperatively, but preoperative levels were not achieved till 2 months after surgery. Correlations of dry eye test values were noted with MLET but they were not significant.
CONCLUSION:
Phacoemulsification surgery can induce dry eye by affecting the dry eye test values post-operatively. In addition, intraoperative MLET should be minimized.
