Our focus is and should be on treating the eye condition. It is also essential to see the patient as a whole. Here are examples of how a patient’s quality of life can improve simply by observation of the patient.
A 62 year old male presented with conjunctivitis. He had a bandage on his right foot. When asked, he complained of recurrent ulcers. There was no history of diabetes. Fundus was normal. His random blood sugar was done, it was 200 mg/dl, urine sugar was 3+. He was referred and treated for diabetes.
A young patient was itching a lot while being examined, he was found to have scabies and the whole family was treated for it. A middle aged lady had a swelling over her neck, we referred her, she had a thyroid disease. Head lice in children were seen and eradicated. These are just some of the instances where we have referred patients for diseases which needed to be treated. It is important to be vigilant and observe the patient as a whole. We can improve the quality of life in many.
