Aim:
To analyse visual outcomes in children with craniosynostosis
Materials:
Children attending our out patient clinic diagnosed with craniosynostosis were selected. Best corrected visual acuity, cover test, extraocular movements, cyclopleigic refraction and fundus findings were analysed.
Results:
24 children with craniosynostosis were analysed. Mean BCVA was 0.47 LogMAR. 6(25%) children had syndromic craniosynostosis. 12(50%) had strabismus, of which 80% had exotropia. Amblyopia was found in 9 children, of which ametropic amblyopia(62%) is commonly seen. 1 child had optic atrophy. 21(87.5%) had refractive errors, of which compound astigmatism is seen in 81.8%.
Conclusion :
Amblyopia, strabismus, refractive errors and optic nerve involvement affects the visual outcome. Compound astigmatism found to be the commonest refractive error in these children. Timely intervention with glasses and patching therapy is necessary.
