AIM- Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of visual morbidity . There is evidence to show that vitamin D may play a role in the pathogenesis of DR , through its effect on immune system, angiogenesis and also has a protective role through its effect on glycemic control and hypertension . This study aims to assess the correlation between severity of DR and vitamin D levels
Inclusion criteria – type 2 diabetes, HBA1C less than or equal to 7%, patients older than 20years .
Methodology – 150 patients with type 2 diabetes were selected and divided into 3 groups,
Group A – no DR
Group B – Non proliferative DR
Group C – proliferative DR
Serum vitamin D , was estimated for all patients .
Result- group C had lower levels of vitamin D in comparison to other groups.
Conclusion – prospective trials are evaluating the reduced risk of complications with supplements , but in the mean time supplements are recommended as they are safe and could very well be helpful .
