Aim:To evaluate intracameral mydriatics as a rapid, effective & safe alternative to topical mydriatics in sustaining pupillary mydriasis in phaco.
Methods: 50 patients were randomly distributed into 2 groups. Preoperative topical mydriatics were used in the topical group & intraoperative intracameral mydriatic regimen (lignocaine 0.5%, epinephrine 0.001%) in the intracameral group. Mydriasis noted before & after drug use i.e; 45min follow. topical mydriatics & 30s follow. intracameral mydriatics & at the end of surgery. Blood pressure & pulse rate were assessed intraoperatively.
Results: Mean pupil size before use of either drug was 1.7mm, it increased to 7.3mm, 45min follow. topical mydriatics & to 5.9mm 30s follow. intracameral mydriatics(p<0.001). At the end of surgery mean pupil size significantly increased with intracameral mydriatics to 6.3mm(p<0.001) & decreased to 5.8mm with topical mydriatics with no significant difference in mean blood pressure & pulse rate intraoperatively.
