Aim- To evaluate and compare the change in macular thickness after uneventful phacoemulsification and small incision cataract surgery (SICS) using spectral domain Optical coherence tomography (SDOCT).
Material and methods – Quasi-experimental study of 60 consecutive patients divided in two equal groups (A- phacoemulsification, B – small incision cataract surgery) by convenient sampling. Macular thickness was measured as central foveal thickness (CFT) and mean retinal thickness in ring diameter of 3 and 6 mm in all 4 quadrants. It was measured pre-operatively, postoperative day 1, 1 week, 4 weeks and 6 weeks.
Result – There was a decrease of macular thickness noted on day 1 post op in both groups. At 1 and 4 weeks, the thickness increased. It restored back to normal in both groups at 6 weeks. The changes were subclinical.
Conclusion- There is no statistically significant difference in the change of macular thickness when we compare the two surgeries.
