Aim:To assess the role of socioeconomic factors on infectious keratitis
Method:Prospective observational study of patients with infectious keratitis between January-July 2017.
Results:507 patients presented to us with microbiologically proven keratitis. The majority were males(n=329,64.9%) and illiterate(n=249,49.1%).Almost 28.6% belonged to agriculture(n=145). 47.3% of the patients(n=241)had an income of less than Rs.5000 per month.Of 304 patients who had possible trauma to the eye,27.9% gave history of exposure to dust particles.Three fourths of the patient gave history of prior treatment by ophthalmologist (n=376,74.2%).51.9% of the stromal infiltrate was less than 5 mm(n=258).Education status had a significant relationship with that of the stromal infiltrate size (p=0.005)
Conclusion:Understanding the socioeconomic factors is important to anticipate the course of the disease. This data aids to recognise the target population so as to strategize timely and appropriate intervention.
