FP507 : Effect of Ophthalmic Viscosurgical Devices(OVDs) on Lens Epithelial Cells – In Vivo Study

Prospective,randomized study included 25 eyes undergoing phacoemulsification, randomized to capsulorhexis being performed under one of 3 agents:ChondroitiSulfate(Group1),Sodium Hyaluronate(Group 2),Balanced Salt Solution(Group3). Paracentesis incision created,one of the three agents injected and retained for 30 seconds.5.00mm capsulorhexis performed using 26-gauge cystotome.Capsules collected and sent to laboratory.In the laboratory,capsules were spread on a slide,LECs were detached from the capsule and fixed with carnoys fixative.Samples subject to HE staining,immunofluorescence,Cell count by Image Analysis System.Central 2mm area also evaluated for % area covered and uncovered by LECs.Ongoing study, results will be updated at time of presentation.
