Speed of reading (SOR) was assessed using NIH MN read charts in patients of acquired cerebral visual impairment (CVI) divided into 3 age groups (group 1-6-18 years, group 2->18-60 years, group 3->60-80 years) and 5 etiologies (dementia, intracranial space occupying lesions (ICSOL), infection, ischemia and traumatic brain injury (TBI)). Mean SOR was equivocal in both eyes in subjects with equal best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in all groups while in cases of unequal BCVA SOR in the better eye (BE) and worse eye (WE) were significantly different. Significant differences in SOR among different etiologies were noted. This was especially relevant while comparing SOR in BE of dementia cases when compared to ischemia cases (p=0.04) and TBI cases (p=0.01). Difference between ICSOL and ischemia cases (p=0.003) and ICSOL and TBI cases (p=0.001) was highly significant. ICSOL and ischemia cases had the worst SOR. SOR is affected by different etiologies at different levels.
