AIMS: To study the epidemiology, occurrence, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment and outcome of orbital tumours in children and adolescents.
METHODS: It is a 5 years retrospective study consisting of 57 patients between 0-18 years of age. The demographic and clinical details were obtained from original case records and analysed.
RESULTS: Mean age of presentation was 9 years with female preponderance with proptosis as the commonest clinical sign. CT scan and HPE were the two most common investigations for diagnosis. Primary tumours were much more common than secondary ones, metastatic ones very less. Benign tumours were commoner than malignant ones. Dermoid cyst was the commonest benign tumour and granulocytic sarcoma the commonest malignant tumour. Surgery was the commonest treatment modality. Most of the cases had favourable outcome while few had poor prognosis.
CONCLUSION: Early and appropriate diagnosis, prompt treatment and regular follow up are essential for better prognosis.
