ECR is the most accident-prone road in India. This paper reports the pattern of ocular injuries on the ECR.
Over 3 years we treated 156 patients; 132 (84.6 %) male and 24 (15.4 %) females. Average age (in years) of males was 48.8 ± 11.4, and of females 33.4 ± 14.07. Road traffic accidents (RTA), fall, assault, and other injuries accounted for 73.07 %, 15.38 %, 5.76 %, and 5.76 % of the cases. Presenting visual acuity (VA): 3.84 % had no light perception, 7.69 % had VA of < 6/60, 36.53 % had VA between 6/60 to 6/24, and 51.92% had VA of 6/18 to 6/6. Closed-globe injuries constituted 98 .07 % (153 cases), and 1.93 % (3 cases) had open-globe injuries. Twenty-four (15.28 %) cases had orbital fractures; blow-out fractures of the floor constituted 3.8 %. 12 (7.69 %) had Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON). RTA accounts for majority of the ocular injuries on ECR; male below fifty constituted the majority. Poor vision resulted mostly from TON and open-globe injuries.
