One of the aim of PG residency program is to acquire proper surgical skills. Residents are learning these surgical skills by observing the skills of operating consultant or seniors and then performing the surgery under guidance of seniors. However the assessment of surgical skills learned is not done objectively.
In the present study two ophthalmic residents were assessed for their surgical skills, with the help of a Rubric for Small Incision Cataract Surgery. Whole surgery was divided in a rubric of various steps, and each step is assessed by the resident and consultant with appropriate score from 0 to 5. Result showed that as the number of surgeries done by them increases, the total as well as score for individual steps gradually increases, suggesting improvement in surgical skill.
