Dr.Dhrubojyoti Sarker, S18247

Purpose- To identify the macular pigmentary changes and RPE pathophysiology alterations from early and subclinical cases of Retinitis Pigmentosa(RP) aided by near infrared(NIR) autofluorescence(AF) imaging

Method- 26 cases with mean age of 21.4± 5.71 years who were provisionally diagnosed with RP from complete history and clinical evaluation. Full field ERG done and eyes with poorer vision enrolled for NIR AF imaging under mydriasis. Corresponding SD-OCT performed to corroborate findings

Result- NIR imaging noted a hyper AF ring at perifoveal zone in 30° field in each 26 eyes. It was intriguing that the proximity of inner border of the ring corresponds to the partially preserved photoreceptor inner segment layer (as identified in OCT). the broader the ring poorer the central vision.

Conclusion- being a common macular dystrophy RP needs to be identified early by best possible non-invasive approach. NIR AF is a novel tool delineating the pathophysiology at molecular level.
