Purpose: To study and correlate the clinical and investigative profile in patients with Thyroid Associated Ophthalmopathy (TAO).
Methods: Prospective observational study. Patients were divided into 2 groups; early and late TAO. Demographic factors and clinical signs were studied and compared between the 2 groups. Thyroid status was evaluated and correlated with severity of ophthalmopathy.
Results: 100 patients were studied. Male gender and smoking was associated with higher risk of late TAO. 72 patients were hyperthyroid, 25 were euthyroid and 3 were hypothyroid. 65% patients had bilateral presentation. Mean extraocular muscle thickness on ultrasonography was significantly more in late TAO. Significant rise of intraocular pressure in upgaze on tonometry was present in late TAO group.
Conclusions: Most of the Indian patients presents in middle age with no sex predilection. Severity of disease was more in late TAO group suggesting a close follow up in these patients.
