Purpose:To evaluate clinical outcomes of Ahmed Glaucoma Valve (AGV) implantation in refractory paediatric glaucoma.
Methods: This study is a retrospective review of the records of 13 patients, less than 18 years of age who underwent AGV surgery from 2014 to 2017,with a minimum follow up of 6 months . The primary outcomes measured were cumulative probability of success, decrease in the IOP and the number of antiglaucoma medications.Success was defined as postoperative IOP between 5 and 21 mm Hg and at least a 20% reduction from baseline IOP.
Results: Mean age of patients was 10.46 years(range:1–17 years).IOP was reduced from 38.84 ±8.93 mmHg properatively to 12.53 ±7.3 mmHg postoperatively.Number of antiglaucoma medications also reduced significantly, postoperatively. At the last follow up the success rates were 69.23% (qualified success) and 15.34% (complete success).
Conclusions:Ahmed Valve implantation is an effective option in lowering the IOP in refractory paediatric glaucoma.
