Aim: To evaluate the prevalence of refractive error changes among the cataract patients in a tertiary centre.
Methods: Data was collected from 189 subjects with senile cataract. Among them 98 had nuclear,51 had posterior subcapsular and 40 had cortical cataract classified by LOCS III. Best corrected visual acuity measurement and refractive error evaluation done in all patients.
Results: The mean age group observed was 52±10 years. The prevalence of myopia and hyperopia was 76% and 24% respectively. Astigmatism was seen in 28% among which myopic astigmatism was 16% and hyperopic astigmatism was 12%
Conclusion: The most prevalent refractive error induced by cataract in our study was myopia and myopic shift was noted in patients with nuclear cataract. In patients with cortical opacities high prevalence of hyperopia was noted.Astigmatic changes were found in all the morphological types of cataract.
