Objective: To study the correlation between visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in amblyopic eyes.
Methods: Prospective clinical study with detailed orthoptic evaluation of 34 consecutive patients of anisometropic (n=19), strabismic (n=8), meridional (n=5) and ametropic amblyopia (n=3) was done. The contrast sensitivity on Pelli Robson chart and Log MAR visual acuity for distance and near visual acuity were compared using unpaired t-test. Cases having visual deprivation amblyopia were excluded.
Results: Irrespective of the type of amblyopia, near visual acuity found to be directly related to the contrast sensitivity. No correlation was found between distance visual acuity and contrast sensitivity.
Conclusion: In all types of amblyopia, there is direct correlation between near visual acuity and contrast sensitivity.
