Aim-To evaluate risk factors of Ocular chemical injury
Setting-Tertiary eye care hospital
Methods-Prospective study of 124 patients of chemical eye injury presented during april 2016 to march 2017 was done with details from history & examination, recorded at presentation & 1month follow up
Results-Most patients were <18yrs(67.3%).Most injuries occurred in domestic settings(78.2%) with majority being accidental(99.2%).Alkali was most common offending chemical(83.1%).Patients,who were referred,presented earlier than those who came directly & it was statistically significant (p value < 0.05). Most of the patients had grades I injury according to Roper Hall grades. Limbal ischemia noted in 44.5% of total patients. BCVA at presentation was < 3/60 in 41% and at 1 month was > 6/18 in 34.8% of patients
Conclusion-Accidental alkali eye injuries are common in children. Public education about effect, management of chemical eye injury and legal monitoring on sales of harmful chemical is required
