Dr.Rajiv Kumar Gupta, G10160

Aim:To create awareness among diabetics about complications of diabetic retinopathy (DR) & motivate them for regular screening for DR.Methods:Meetings with members of IMA & NGOs at 2 months intervals for consecutive 6 months were organized in Ramgarh district of Jharkhand.Ophthalmologists explained about complications of DR to them & emphasized on the importance of regular screening for DR. Meetings were then followed by awareness walks for DR. At the end of 6 months,a DR screening camp was organized in a CHC in the Ramgarh district. Results:A total of 368 diabetics turned up for screening. This was in contrast to 104 diabetics that attended the CHC before these clinical meetings. Conclusion:Regular meetings with different organizations should be conducted to fight against diabetic blindness. Because at most times,it is the physicians & local health workers that are the first point of contact with diabetics; & they are in the best position to motivate diabetics for eye examination.
