Aim: To assess the awareness about diabetic retinopathy (DR) prevention amongst diabetes mellitus (DM) cases.
Method: Cases of DM undergoing first retinal screening were enrolled. The demographic details of cases were recorded & subjected to a validated questionnaire to assess awareness about primary & secondary prevention.
Results: A total of 800 cases screened, 660 were screened for first time. The mean age was 52.8±11.3 yrs with 54.5% male, 95.8% type II DM with mean duration 6.5 yrs. Overall 68.5% were aware about DR, 23.5% knew about role of glycemic control. Awareness was significantly more in male, positive family history, higher educational qualification & SES. Only 11.5% knew about secondary prevention. DR was significantly more amongst those who were unaware. The rate of referral by the physician for routine DR screening was 21.2%.
Conclusion: Targeted interventions should be formulated for increasing the awareness about DR to decrease its morbidity.
