INTRODUCTION: In India major cause of blindness is cataract. Tribal population differs regarding socioeconomic status, occupation, literacy etc. Hence the study was conducted. METHOD: Hospital based cross-sectional study was done for 2 years among 184 tribal patients aged 40 years and above. Modified systematic random sampling method was applied. Level of awareness was assessed by an interview schedule. RESULTS: Out of 184 patients, 37% were in the age group 60 to 69 years and 70 years and above. Females outnumbered males. Farmers (46.20%) were more affected. 95% had bilateral cataracts. Cortical cataract was most common. 98.42% had poor level of awareness and was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05%). CONCLUSION: Cortical cataract was associated with multiple factors. Majority had poor level of awareness. It can be assumed as one of the barriers.
