INTRODUCTION: Various anesthetic techniques have been tried to perform primary pterygium surgery. The role of lidocaine 2% gel has already been established in cataract surgery. The potential role of this topical anaesthetic agent in pterygium surgery has not yet been established. We designed this prospective, interventional case study to establish its role in pterygium surgery with amniotic membrane grafting.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 30 patients with nasal pterygium were selected, consent taken and operated under topical anaesthesia (2% lignocaine jelly) with amniotic membrane grafting.
RESULT: 2% lignocaine jelly showed efficacy equivalent to local anaesthesia with no patient discomfort. Anaesthetic effect was long lasting and no pain was experienced by the patient during the surgery. There was no graft displacement noted post-op day 1
CONCLUSION: 2% lignocaine jelly is an effective and easy method for pterygium surgery
Amniotic membrane graft shows better post op result compared to CAG.
