PURPOSE-Jelly fish stings are uncommon emergencies .Significant morbidities can occur particularly with infestations of large number of jelly fish in coastal areas.
METHODS-A 25year old presented to casualty with injury of left eye during work by jelly fish secretions.He complained of pain,malaise,nausea,vomiting.Vision was assessed bedside and was normal,on vision chart being 20/125 in left eye and 20/20 in right eye.
RESULT-Anterior segment examination showed lid edema,congestion,chemosis,multiple epithelial defects,reaction in anterior chamber.Posterior segment examination was normal.Saline wash was given and treatment with topical antibiotics,topical steroids,anticholinergics,analgesics,tear substitutes was started.One week post injury patient improved with vision of 20/20 In left eye.
CONCLUSION-Saline wash and start of conservative treatment is of paramount importance to prevent permanent loss of vision due to anterior segment necrosis and/or sterile ulceration.
