FP188 : Awareness of Diabetic Retinopathy among Diabetics during first Fundoscopic Examination

Diabetes Mellitus is a major public health concern worldwide and diabetic retinopathy is a becoming the leading cause of blindness.Occurrence of Diabetic Retinopathy(DR) cannot be prevented where as its sight threatening complications can be reduced by early detection and timely treatment.aim:To assess the awareness of DR among Diabetics who underwent fundoscopic examination for the first time.

materials and methods:a questionnaire regarding awareness of DR was administered to 1047 Diabetics who came for their first fundoscopic examination.results:Only 22% were aware that diabetes can affect eyes.7% knew that Diabetics should undergo regular eye check up.7% knew that incidence of DR can be reduced by control of diabetes.92% were unaware of the treatment modalities of Diabetic Retinopathy.the reason for undergoing fundus examination was referral from physician in 90%.conclusion:there is an urgent need to increase the awareness of DR to prevent its sight threatening complications.
