Aim: To highlight the role of an ophthalmologist in the detection of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.
Case report: A 40year old female patient presented with complaints of fever, vomiting and generalized weakness with a past history of hyperthyroidism. Over time her conditioned worsened as patient became drowsy and complained of headache . Ophthalmology reference was seeked . Anterior segment evaluation was normal. Fundus examination showed bilateral peripapillary hemorrhage, retinal hemorrhages and disc edema. Hematological investigation revealed anemia and thrombocytopenia. Ultrasound abdomen and pelvis showed splenomegaly. CT scan of head showed subarachnoid hemorrhage and subdural hematoma and the diagnosis of ITP was established.
Good comprehensive examination can clinch a systemic diagnosis.
