This is a hospital based interdisciplinary prospective study. The patients in age group of 40 to 80 years from out patient and in patient department with predefined inclusion criteria were included in the study. Patients with other causes of raised blood sugar and peripheral vascular disease were excluded by relevant investigations. Bed side ankle/brachial index (ABI) were calculated using sphygmomanometer and colour Doppler and the presence and stage of diabetic retinopathy were assessed by ophthalmologist using contact lens biomicroscopy. Significant association was found between abnormal ankle/brachial index (<0.9) and severe diabetic retinopathy (p < 0.05). Patients with abnormal ankle/brachial index were more likely to have severe diabetic retinopathy and were at increased risk of losing their sight, mandating fundus evaluation in such cases for timely intervention to safeguard the vision of the patient.
