Objective: To study the effect of Botulinum toxin injection on Astigmatism & Tear Film in Blepharospasm(BEB) & Hemifacial spasm(HFS).
Methods: Prospective interventional study. Subjects-Patients with BEB & HFS requiring BTX-A. Exclusion criteria-Conditions affecting astigmatism. Jankovic Rating Scale (JRS), Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), IOP, Schirmer’s, tear break-up time(TBUT) were noted prior and 1month post-injection. Astigmatism was measured by Zeiss ATLAS 9000CTS.
Results: Eight eyes of 6 patients were analyzed. Paired t test was used for analysis. JRS frequency (p<0.05), severity (p<0.05) and OSDI (p<0.05) improved following injection. TBUT improved post-injection (6.13 ± 2.80 vs 8.75 ±2. 60 s, p=0.004). Mean astigmatism reduced from 1.56 ± 1.94D to 1.16 ± 1.39D (p=0.074). There was no significant difference in the UCVA, BCVA, Schirmer’s test and IOP. Conclusion: This pilot study shows that BTX-A injection causes reduction in corneal astigmatism and improvement in TBUT.
