AIMS: To evaluate the role of oral vitamin C on postoperative astigmatism in phacoemulsification & to compare its effect on postoperative symptoms.
METHODS: In Group A 200 patients were started on Oral Vitamin C(500mg TDS) from 1st postoperative day & in group B 200 patients were given routine postoperative medications after undergoing temporal phacoemulsification. The keratometry of both groups were done preoperatively as well as at 2, 4 and 6 weeks postoperatively.
RESULTS: The mean difference of astigmatism preoperatively in Group “A” patients was 1.096(1.0088) which decreased at 6 weeks to 0.8064(0.715) (p-0.0003) whereas in Group B it was 0.922(0.542) which increased to 0.988(0.666)(p-0.0005).Group A patients had significantly better postoperative comfort as compared to group B. The SIA was 0.15D in group A as compared to 0.77D in group B at 6weeks.
CONCLUSION: Hence, oral Vitamin C plays a crucial role in decreasing postoperative astigmatism and enhances patient comfort levels.
