BACKGROUND : The objective of this study was to report the use of multi targeted polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and Quantiferon gold test in cases of presumed tubercular uveitis where chest x-ray , sputum test for Acid Fast Bacilli and Mantoux tests are negative. Multi targeted polymerase chain reaction test using three targets specific for Mycobacterium tuberculosis that is IS6110 , MPB64 and protein b was performed on intra ocular fluid samples derived from all six patients. Blood samples were also collected from all six patients for Quantiferon Gold test.
RESULTS : Out of 6 patients 1 patient was showing both multi targeted PCR and Quantiferon Gold test positive. Only multi targeted PCR was positive in 2 patients and 2 patients were tested positive for only Quantiferon Gold test. In 1 patient both multi targeted PCR and Quantiferon gold test was negative.
CONCLUSION : Multi targeted PCR and Quantiferon Gold test can be useful investigating tools for diagnosing tubercular uveitis.
