Purpose: To identify causes of vision loss in children attending a tertiary eye care centre in Greater Noida.

Method: A retrospective data review was conducted for children less than 16 years of age who attended from Jan 2014 to Dec 2015. Causes of vision loss were analyzed for children with visual acuity less than 6/18 for distance in the better eye.

Results: The data analysis of 1880 children revealed 98 children were visually impaired. The leading causes of vision loss were corneal scars, cataract, amblyopia, glaucoma, aphakia, adnexal problem, retinal problem, recurrent uveitis and optic atrophy. Trauma was the most frequent cause of visual impairment, and other causes include hereditary, intrauterine factors among others. Over 40% blindness could have been avoided and in another 42 eyes it could have treated early to restore vision.

Conclusion: This study explored the causes of vision loss in children in a tertiary hospital where trauma is the frequent cause of visual impairment.
