DCR operation is a very satisfying surgery for a ophthalmologist. But is avoided by many surgeons mainly due to two reasons -bleeding and fear of failure.Pre operatively we do all short of investigation including ENT opinion so as to find any probable cause of failure.
Aim- To find out whether ENT opinion is really required before surgery or it’s just a mental block.
Material and methods-40 cases of chronic dacryocystitis with blocked NLD were included in the study. All the cases underwent DCR surgery in the same OT by the same surgeon and with same set of pre operative investigation.ENT opinion was not sought in any of the cases.Results- 38 cases 6 month post were found to be patent. In 2 cases it was blocked. One had a pre operative DNS on x-ray and the other case cause of failure can’t be assetained.Conclusion-From this case series we can say that ENT opinion is not at all required for DCR surgery , ophthalmologist themselves can detect status of septum by simple X-ray PNS.
