FP1762 : Atypical Mycobacterium in the eye- Puzzling group of bacterium with varied clinical presentations

Purpose: Case series of 7 patients of NTM related uveitis

Methods: A retrospective analysis of 7 patients with non tuberculous mycobacterial uveitis

Results: Total 9 eyes of 7 patients included in this study. Average age at presentation was 35.5 years. Four patients (57.1%) were males and three (42.8%) were females. Diagnosis was made on PCR studies in which M.avium was detected in 5 patients (71.4%),M.fortuitum in 2 patients (28.5%).Two eyes had endophthalmitis like picture (22.2%), two with granuloma (22.2%), one had frosted branch like picture (11.1%), two with healed retinitis (22.2%) and two with active retinochoroiditis (22.2%). All patients received second line ATT drugs along with oral steroids wherever necessary. Four patients (57.1%) were Retropositive. Visual acuity improved in 4 eyes of 3 patients (44.4%) and worsened in 5 eyes of 4 patients (55.5%).Conclusion: Atypical mycobacterial infections is a unique entity and delay in its diagnosis leads to poor visual outcome.
