We conducted a prospective, randomized study to evaluate the efficacy of dexmedetomidine in peribulbar block in terms of: onset time and duration of block, hemodynamic stability profile, patient comfort and surgeon satisfaction.100 patients were randomly assigned into 2 groups: Control (n = 50) received lignocaine bupivacaine block and Dex group (n = 50) received additional 20 µg dexmedetomidine. At baseline, there was no statistically significant difference in HR, MAP, DBP and RR between the two groups with a difference noted in SBP at baseline. There was significant difference noted in SBP and MAP at different time intervals with a trend towards its decrease as time progressed in Dex group. The mean sedation score was significantly higher in the Dex group than the control group. The surgeon satisfaction was higher in the Dex group than the control group.Dexmedetomidine is a useful and safe drug in combination with lignocaine bupivacaine in peribulbar for vitreoretinal surgery.
