Prospective study was done on 50 patients of diabetic macular edema (DME).
2 groups of 25 patients each were made.
Combination of intra vitreal anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) plus steroid were given in group 1 and
Intravitreal anti-VEGF alone in group 2.
Changes in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT) by optical coherence tomograpy (OCT) and intra-ocular pressure (IOP) were observed over 6 months in both groups.
RESULTS:
-BCVA improved gradually to about 30% in group 1 and to around 25% in group 2 over 6 months.
-Reduction ratio in mean CMT was around 38% in group 1
and around 16% in group 2 over 6 months.
-Rise in IOP was observed in group 1 in first 3 months post injection. Anti- glaucoma medications were given for same to group 1.
CONCLUSION:
Combination of anti-VEGF and steroid was found to provide more efficient and long standing effect in terms of reducing CMT and improvement in BCVA compared to anti-VEGF alone in DME.
