Open globe injuries are a major cause of preventable monocular blindness in children which demands special attention due to difficulty in management.
Paediatric patients (<18yrs) with open globe injuries were studied for 2 years and assessed for various parameters. Out of 42 patients 74% (31 cases) were male, most common objects causing injury were pen and stick 38% (16 cases). Around 73% (32 cases) presented within 1 day of injury. There were 3 cases of zone II and zone III tear each. Rest were zone I tears. 91% (38 cases) required surgical intervention. 52% (22 cases) developed traumatic cataract. 43% (18 cases) underwent secondary cataract extraction. Posterior chamber IOL was implanted in 38% (16 cases). Good visual prognosis (>6/60) was seen in 79% (33 cases). Traumatic endophthalmitis developed in 17% (7 cases) with gross impairment of vision.
This study aims to generate public awareness on common causes of paediatric open globe injuries and long term visual prognosis.
